Qualms of Money… Especially when trying to rent an apartment in NYC.

Today I submitted an application for an apartment that myself, a fellow flight attendant perspective and hopefully another will inhabit. However, we do not have the 3rd person yet, and my salary as a flight attendant is supposedly 3k a month, at best.

This is cleverly written out on our employment letter. Ideally, that means with my salary and my roommate that has committed thus far to living with me, together we will hopefully be making 72k between the two of us. More realistically, it could be less.

This poses a problem when looking to rent an apartment. Most places want you to make 40X what the rent is and in NYC rent is pricey. For example, we could not find a 2 bedroom that us decent for under 2 grand without making extreme concessions.

On top of the above, we are required by our airline to live with-in a 90-minute radius of JFK. Many rules and hopefully they are worth it.

I found an apartment but the rent… so it’s a 3 bedroom, 2 bath apartment in Brooklyn. A good part of Brooklyn. Bed-Sty right off the Utica stop. Here is the worry now… I have never been mugged. and now I live in prime mugging territory. Rent will make my money tight. I will need to be careful. Possibly get a side job. Ok definitely get a side job. Find ways to make extra money. Not give up on making my life and the life I want work.

But what happens if I do not get approved for this single apartment I have found that I could call home. HOME. It will be more important than ever, once I start flying, to have a place to call home and come home too. Plus, I found this amazing cafe that makes me happy and sure enough it is right around the corner from this apartment.

I also can’t shake the hope that my roommate loves it as much as I do.

*** I wrote this about a month and half ago… I now have two great roommates and I am excited about all that is to come.
