Bite my tongue… don’t look like a jackass

Today we got to our training center fire pit training was first.

Compared to ship fire training this was not as bad as I thought it would be. They had us extinguish a very small fire that was lighter fluid burning with a dioxide extinguisher. The smoke hood was probably the hardest aspect and even that was super simple.

Then came the swimming/raft part which after going through ship safety was a quite easy. We swam less than 200 meters. Then we had to demonstrate the positions in the water that were taught to us. We then had to drag a fellow crew member from one end to the other. Finally, we had to get into a raft and put the canopy up. No flipping of the raft. Plus getting in the raft was assisted by those already in it. Huddle Position

To be blunt I’m not sure what I would expect from those in my training class if we were in a real water landing. However, the fact is I have more than enough faith in myself in those instances that it would all be ok. This company so far has been wonderful in the notion that we must rely on ourselves.

This process so far has been a lot more relaxed than expected. I really like this company but in a way, the informal attitude that has now come to pass makes me question whether people are taking these safety lessons seriously.

Best to bite my tongue and let supervisors and trainers weed the non-qualified people out then look like a jackass know it all.

I am very happy we all passed our fire, swim, and initial test today. Truly if someone didn’t pass I would think they are very special and when it comes to me, I really do want people to succeed even if it doesn’t always seem that way.
